if you need a diary tonight, stay with lose it!. it already ships. basic is $0. if you used it, got busy, and the barcode now sits on premium, that is the same ghosting story as everyone else. lowkal is not in the store. it is the waitlist for usuals, a barcode, pairings, and a log you can reopen in seconds. logging a meal stays free. $24.99 the first year, then $49.99/year.
we are not going to pretend a waitlist beats 774 thousand ios ratings on day one. their help, updated august 4, 2026: premium is $79.99/year, no monthly on that page, lifetime $299.99. the listing is 18+ and contains advertising.
simple . easy . fast.
what lose it! is
loseit.com describes a calorie counting and weight loss app on ios and android since 2008. their words: the app is “free to download, with an optional premium subscription.” the homepage pitch is “say it. snap it. scan it.” — voice, photo, and barcode logging as the product story.
basic (free): $0. “essential tracking tools, including a personalized daily calorie budget and access to our 50m+ food database.”
premium: $79.99 usd / year, auto-renews. includes “barcode scanning, smart photo and voice logging features,” plus custom goals, device sync, future meal logging, and more.
lifetime: $299.99 usd one-time for free/basic accounts, or $229.99 if you already pay for premium. no refunds on lifetime, per that page.
there is no monthly premium price on that help article. we are not going to invent one from an old blog.
the us app store listing (id 297368629), checked august 29, 2026: 774k ratings, age 18+, and the rating sheet includes “contains advertising.”
why people stop opening it
lose it! still works as a free calorie budget. people drift when the fast path (scan it, snap it) is premium and the free path is a search. that is a busy tuesday, not a breakup.
the scanner moved
the homepage still sells scan it / snap it as the easy path. the help center is more specific. a barcode article says they are “in the process of moving the barcode scanner (scan it) and nutrition label scanner to part of our premium features.” some free members still have it during the transition; once it is locked on an account, premium is required. that article was updated april 1, 2026. the august 4, 2026 membership page already lists barcode scanning and smart photo logging under premium.
“we are also in the process of moving the barcode scanner (scan it) and nutrition label scanner to part of our premium features.”
lose it! help, unlocking the barcode scanner / scan it, updated april 1, 2026
that is the split we will name: a real free diary, and the faster cameras sitting on $79.99/year. it is not as loud as myfitnesspal’s faq, but it is on their own help.
ads on free
apple’s listing for the us store says the app contains advertising. we are not going to count interstitials. we will say: free lose it contains ads; lowkal will not put ads in the log.
the product is a weight-loss app
the name is lose it. the homepage is weight loss. member quotes on that page are pound-lost quotes. that is their voice. ours is not. no good/bad food. no celebrating rapid loss. estimates, not medical advice. 18+. if the weight-loss frame is what you want, they already make that app.
the database is a reason to stay
50 million plus foods on basic, in their help copy. lowkal will not match that. if searching a huge catalog is how you log, stay. we are shipping usuals, pairings, a daily target, and a step budget.
lose it! vs lowkal
lose it!
lowkal
status
in the app store since 2008. 774k ios ratings. 18+.
waitlist. coming soon. iphone and android when we ship. 18+.
log a meal without paying
yes, on basic, via search and the 50m+ database they publish.
premium, per the august 4, 2026 membership page. barcode was being moved off free as of april 2026 help.
barcode is part of logging. recipe urls and unlimited scans are paid.
ads in the log
us listing: contains advertising.
none.
price they publish (usd)
basic $0. premium $79.99/year. lifetime $299.99 (or $229.99 from active premium). no monthly on that help page.
$24.99 first year on the waitlist, then $49.99/year. $9.99/month exists. we show the year.
food database
50m+, per their help, on basic.
we will not claim a 20 million food database. usuals and pairings are the habit.
macros
homepage lists macro tracking as a feature. we are not going to invent which tier every macro screen sits on beyond what their help names.
a daily calorie target is free. macros are on the paid plan.
steps
homepage: apple health and google fit.
apple health or health connect. more steps, more food.
how they talk about food
weight loss app. pound-lost member quotes on the homepage.
no good/bad food. estimates, not medical advice.
choose lowkal if / stay with them if
choose lowkal if
you already know how to log and you keep meaning to come back.
you want usuals and pairings for the chain, the leftover, the delivery bag, without ads in the log.
you will wait. $24.99 then $49.99/year, on the page before email. iphone and android when we ship.
stay with lose it! if
you need an app that already exists, today, with a $0 basic diary and a huge food database.
you already have a lose it streak, friends, or years of logs.
premium at $79.99/year is fine for snap it / scan it / say it, and you like the weight-loss frame they sell.
choose cronometer if
you need vitamins and minerals. lose it is a calorie budget. lowkal is a calorie log. cronometer is the micronutrient tool. we will not fake that panel.
what we are not saying
we did not time how long a meal takes to log in lose it. we will not publish a 45–90 second number we did not measure. we did not run a 30-day test. no mape table.
we are not saying lose it is a bad free app. basic is $0 with a calorie budget and a very large database, in their words. that is a real product. for a lot of people it is the right one.
we are not going to quote an old $39.99 premium price. the help article we checked on august 29, 2026 says $79.99/year.
we are not putting lawsuits on this page.
faq
is lose it! free?
basic is $0, per their membership help updated august 4, 2026. the us listing contains advertising. barcode and photo logging are premium on that same help page.
how much is lose it premium?
$79.99 usd per year, auto-renewing. that help page does not list a monthly plan. lifetime is $299.99, or $229.99 if you already pay for premium.
should i switch from lose it to lowkal?
not if you need the app this week. we are on a waitlist. come over later if you want a log you can reopen in seconds, without ads. stay if the diary you have is working.
does lowkal have a bigger food database?
no. they publish 50m+. we will not compete on that number. that is a reason to stay on lose it.
what about micronutrients?
neither lose it’s basic pitch nor lowkal is cronometer. if you need vitamins and minerals, use cronometer.
